After my war on mosquitos is finished, I'm going to start war on HP. I don't know how yet, but it's going to be a bloody one. I needed to scan some bar codes and other stuff for school and HP's officejet 5510 all-in-one is way to slow on the old 650mhz. So I moved the printer-fax-copier upstairs and wired it up. Drivers missing, of course. I first downloaded and installed the 'simple' one. No need for network printing etc. Well, it seems the drivers thought I had no need for scanning either. There was no other option then installing the 'complete' (+300 -swearword- MB!) one. It seems to include network printing, scanning and a bunch of useless programs. I think my PC agrees to that because starting from that install he:

  • had to reboot 5 times (uptime before that: 7 days)
  • takes 2 more minutes before start-up is finished
  • refuses to do anything after I try to upload a file to iStock. It's browser based upload so I figured I'd try it in Opera and Explorer too. No luck with those programs either and thus a total of three resets.
  • makes Illustrator crash every time I ungroup something, keep the whole former group selected and try to change fill color.
  • just acts weird on me.

Plan of action:

  • Scan the things I need and then first thing uninstall everything that has something to do with HP.
  • Find some kind of app that checks the processes running.
  • Scan computer.
  • Search on e-bay for whatever nuclear weapon I can drop on HP's headcenter.

This just adds up to the scanner installation last week at my godfather's PC. Brand new XP installation, downloaded the XP drivers, HP scanner program for the combination of that scanner and XP refuses to communicate with the scanner. Even XP's scanning program did a great job on that. Conclusion: Starting next purchase, it's Epson all the way.
